Internet access with WebTV-Boxes? |
 |
|
Professionals have good reasons to access the internet only with a PC. But manufacturers of the TV-industrie still try to sell $500 set-top-boxes only for internet access. The customer will be very disappointed after installing this gimmicks. No printing way, no harddisk to store interesting Sites or software or documents. Some boxes require an additional email adress, sometimes an additional internet account. Receiving emails on the set-top box means that you have to manage a second source for adresses and communications beneath your PC. Confusion is preprogrammed.
When these products are advertised as providing Internet "access", find out what access means.
If Internet access products are less expensive to purchase than personal computers, they provide poor features.
Before you buy a product that claims to provide Internet access, find out what the product can do and what it can't. Think about how you plan to use it. Do you want to see and hear music videos or late-breaking news? Play games alone or with others? Participate in chat rooms? Receive email with photos attached? Connect with your friends through instant messaging? Most Internet access devices may not allow you to do these things. Ask the manufacturer or retailer if the product you're considering can provide the features you're looking for.
If you're shopping for a product that will give you Internet access, consider these questions and answers:
Q. Can you do the same things online with an Internet access product that you can with a personal computer?
A. Probably not. In most cases, a computer lets you access more information and entertainment than an Internet access product (for example WebTV).
Q. What are the limitations of an Internet access product?
A. Limitations vary, depending on the product and, in some cases, the service it uses to connect to the Internet. Internet access products may not let you play certain games, use some audio or video features, send or receive certain attachments to email messages, or view information in formats like Java or PDF (Portable Document Format). You may be able to access information in a text format only. In addition, you may not be able to download information or software from the Internet to add features to your product the same way you can with a PC. You may have to wait for product upgrades from the manufacturer or Internet service provider

SAVE your money and installing efforts: Never use another internet access device than a PC.
The only exception to this rule are mobil devices like WAP, where the mobil access is a benefit for itself and restrictions can be accepted. The clear advantage of Tvoon is, that Tvoon connects your TV in your living room with your existing PC in your study.
So you have all PC-functions (your adresses; your email-database; Word; Excel; Printer; Modern Browsers) available without additional hardware, which is antiquated within a year. By installing a CD and a small cable between your TV and your PC you can save $1000 for noisy (have you ever heared a fan in a living room?) set-top-boxes with limited functions.
The Tvoon concept makes sense, especially due to the fact, that modern set-top-boxes do cost the same as a new PC. So even you don`t own a PC, Tvoon is the solution: Buy a standard-PC; install the Tvoon CD and connect your TV with the Tvoon-convergence-cable®. Tvoon is a software-suite which runs in the background of a PC and brings all PC-Functions (print; fax; email; internet; textwriting ..) on TV, but with the same simplicity a TV-Viewer is used to.
Keep in mind, that a set-top-box is antiquated within a year, your PC will be updated via internet within minutes. Tvoon runs a website, which automatically updates your TV/PC/Tvoon-functions.
This is why Tvoon is a revolution for the set-top-box industrie, the interactive TV industrie and the whole entertainment sector. TV will never be the same, since "computer added" joins "TV". Tvoon is computer added TV, Tvoon is convergence consequent.
